Tranquil Courtyard in Forest Hill

tranquil courtyard garden with climbing plants and brick paving
This tiny plot in Forest Hill was a joy to design. The clients wanted to feel cosy, calm and private, having downsized from a much bigger property and garden space. Being able to come out to decompress after a hectic day and also entertain friends and family were important, but what was at the heart of the design was being surrounded by plants.
Working closely with the clients to bring together some of their favourite plants from previous gardens, along with new additions, we began with a backdrop of mixed climbers. Adding in a carefully selected colour palette of blues and burgundies, with a mix of naturalistic growing forms with more structure clipped bay balls and statement trees.
Making the most of every inch of the garden, we created a mixed patio using porcelain and clay pavers, to soften the space, keep it feeling warm and adding planting pockets into the paving to bring the plants inwards from the perimeter.
The end result is cosy and charming, and feels both classic and modern, ensuring it'll last for many years to come and continue to improve as the plants mature over time.
